What's a tithe?

posted 18 Feb 2013, 08:28 by Dean Fostekew
Yesterday's readings challenged us at the Good Shepherd to reflect upon our giving. Giving of our time, talents and treasure and the Old Testament reading from Deuteronomy 26:1-12 really laid it on the line. We were reminded that out of sheer joy for the blessings God has given us we should seek to give back to him our first fruits (tithe). The tithe (originally 10% of one's income) was traditionally given to the church for the work of God in the community and wider world. How one interprets a tithe today is up to the individual but as Christians we are called to give to the church for the work of God and to other organisations and charities which seek to make the lives of others better. Whatever we do we have to give and we should give freely in thanksgiving for the things we have received.
