Church of the Good Shepherd Sunday 31st May 2020 Pentecost ‘ZOOM’
Introit: Come Holy Ghost our souls inspire (St Mary’s Cathedral Choir)
Welcome Hymn
O worship the King
all glorious above;
O gratefully sing
his pow’r and his love:
our shield and defender the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise.
O tell of his might,
O sing of his grace,
whose robe is the light,
whose canopy space;
his chariots of wrath
the deep-thunder clouds form, and dark in his path
on the wings of the storm.
This earth, with its store of wonders untold,
almighty, thy pow’r hath founded of old:
hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree,
and round it hath cast, like a mantle the sea.
Thy bountiful care
what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air,
it shines in the light;
it streams from the hills,
it descends to the plain, and sweetly distils
in the dew and the rain.
O measureless might, ineffable love,
while angels delight
to hymn thee above,
thy humbler creation, though feeble their lays,
with true adoration shall sing to thy praise.
Collect
O God, who on the day of Pentecost enlightened the hearts of your people by the fire of the Holy Spirit: give us wisdom and understanding, and lead us into all truth, that your Church may be kept in the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world, without end. Amen
Gloria (Good Shepherd Service)
Glory to God in the highest, and peace – peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the father, Lord God, lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the father, receive our prayer. For you alone are the holy one, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the father. Amen.
Reading: Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all
together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven
there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and
it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them,
and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation
under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound
the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each
one heard them speaking in the native language of
each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all
these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that
we hear, each of us, in our own native language?
9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of
Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and
Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of
Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our
own languages we hear them speaking about God’s
deeds of power.’ 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one
another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13But others sneered
and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ 14 But
Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and
addressed them:‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be
known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these
are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine
o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken
through the prophet Joel:17 “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will
pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men
shall see visions, and your old men shall dream
dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and
women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and
they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the
heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and
fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to
darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of
the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 “Then everyone who
calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Hymn
Come down, O love divine,
Seek thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter draw near,
Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.
O let it freely burn,
Till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming; And let thy glorious light
Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
Let holy charity
Mine outward vesture be,
And lowliness become my inner clothing; True lowliness of heart,
Which takes the humbler part,
And o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.
And so the yearning strong,
With which the soul will long,
Shall far outpass the pow’r of human telling; Nor can we guess its grace,
Till we become the place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes its dwelling.

Hymn
Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion city of our God;
He whose word cannot be broken Formed thee for his own abode.
On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, Thou mays’t smile at all thy foes.
See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love,
Well supply thy sons and daughters, And all fear of want remove.
Who can faint while such a river
Ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace which. Like the Lord, the giver, Never fails from age to age.
Saviour, if of Zion’s city
I through grace a member am, Let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in thy name.
Fading is the worldling’s pleasure, Boasted pomp and empty show;
Solid joys and lasting treasure None but Zion’s children know.
Blessing
The Spirit of truth lead you in to all truth, give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and to proclaim the word and works of God; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always.Amen.
